The Polish Lowland Sheepdog — known in Poland as the Polski Owczarek Nizinny, or PON — is an ancient Polish herding breed with a history stretching back at least 500 years in the lowland plains of Poland, where it was used to herd and guard sheep and cattle. The PON is believed to be one of the ancestral breeds that contributed to the development of the Bearded Collie in Scotland — a connection traced to a 16th-century trade of Polish sheep and PON dogs to Scottish merchants. The breed's most distinctive feature is its profuse, shaggy double coat that falls over the eyes, giving it a characteristic peering expression similar to the Old English Sheepdog and the Bearded Collie. The coat comes in a wide range of colors and patterns including white, grey, brown, black, and various combinations. The PON is a medium-sized, compact, and muscular dog with a naturally bobbed or docked tail, and is known for its exceptional memory — a trait that made it invaluable for independent herding work where it needed to remember pasture routes and flock patterns without constant direction. The breed nearly disappeared during World War II and was revived through the dedicated efforts of Polish veterinarian Dr. Danuta Hrądzińska-Dobrzańska. The PON was recognized by the AKC in 2001.
